Days Out - Fowey Christmas Market

Baby Guy and I were up early yesterday to make our way out to the Fowey Christmas Market.  Knowing how busy it gets I wanted to be there first thing so we'd be finished before it got too crowded.  There were lots and lots of lovely stalls with beautifully displayed items.

As many of you will know in Cornwall we are lucky enough to have lots and lots of small companies producing exceptional food and drink. Hedgerow was a new company to me and they claim to be an "artisan food company, sourcing local and foraged ingredients, creating bespoke flavour combinations through food and drink".  I bought a bottle of their sloe gin for Libby's husband Mark's Christmas present.  He is a bit of a sloe gin connoisseur, regularly trying different sloe gins on the various shoots he attends - we'll see what he thinks of this one.  Hedgerow's beautiful bottle came with a pretty wax seal and a handwritten label stating which one of the Hedgerow team made the tipple.

Bloom Remedies is an organic skincare company based in West Cornwall and I really liked the look of their products which were beautifully presented.  I noticed that they had been featured in the December issue of "Cornwall Today" and that owner Marie had trained at Neal's Yard in Covent Garden.  I bought a citrus lip balm which smells heavenly.

Another Christmas present bagged was a Bad Boy Chilli Co box set for my chef brother-in-law.  These chilli mash are made by "two mates with passion for chilli" from Lostwithiel.  They use a disused glass house in a walled garden to grow chillies for their Kernow Gold Label and carefully source chillies from their country of origin for their other mash; the box set I bought includes Asian, Caribbean, Mexican and Indian chillies.  The guys on the stall were clearly enthusiastic about their products and were keen to get people to use chillies beyond their normal remit - they had tasters of their chilli brownies which were delicious.

There was a great atmosphere in the marquee and the whole place was buzzing.  It's clearly a popular date in Fowey's calendar as I overheard one women saying to her friend that she comes on the first day and has a quick look at all the stalls and then returns the next day to make her purchases!

After leaving the market we had a quick wonder around the town.  Fowey's shops are full of independent traders and the town is a great place for getting some unique and unusual things.  The shop's windows were all looking great.

The bakery in the photo above is the popular Quay Bakery which always has a healthy throng crowding around the window.  The smells coming from the bakery were amazing so I couldn't help but going in and picking a little something up to take home - yum!

Last purchase of the day was from some adorably dressed little girls who were selling Reindeer Food.  If you've never seen it before it's a sparkly, yummy mix (to reindeers at least!) which you put out on the driveway to direct Father Christmas' sleigh team to your house.

All in all a great start to the festive season in Cornwall - roll on the next event!

Festive photoshoot at Poltarrow

We still have one cottage available for Christmas and four free for New Year so this week Libby and Kate staged the cottages ready for our photographer to take some promotional photos.  Kate has always been rather keen on Christmas so readily lent some of her extensive festive collection - she has since decided to permanently lend them as the cottages looked so good!  We ended up with lots of great photos, here are a selection of our favourite .......

So if you know anyone that would like to spend Christmas or New Year in Cornwall send them our way!

21 - 28 December: Red Deer (sleeps 4 plus cot)

From 28 December: Deer Park (sleeps 2), Fallow (sleeps 4 plus cot), Stag (sleeps 6 plus cot), Roebuck (sleeps 6 plus cot)

Around the farm - First frost of the year

This morning we had our first frost; I was up early as some guests needed breakfast first thing as they were travelling to Heathrow to catch a flight - we had to defrost their windscreen before they could depart!  It was about 9.30am when I could get outside to take some photos - the frost had gone but the thaw remained and made for some pretty Autumnal shots ....

The front drive - the horse chestnuts continue to shed their crisp, rust coloured leaves

Peter's duck pond with its new fencing surrounding it.
A hole in the old fencing meant Peter's ducks had 'disappeared' - we suspect a stoat.

The fishing lake

Trying out the 'macro' setting on the camera.

Another shot of the horse chestnuts.

A shot of the front field looking towards Polgooth.

Days out - Harvest Time at The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Once again it's the time of the year when the gardeners at Heligan put together a magnificent display of the harvest from the kitchen garden.  This year they have concentrated on the pumpkin and every variety going must be featured .....

At first glance I thought they had added oranges to the display!

Carved wooden mice have been added to the display

A harvest wheat sheaf

The tables in the tea room had been given autumnal centrepieces
It was a great display and I'm glad I popped up to see it.  The gardens have lots of activities over the next couple of weeks to celebrate the Harvest  - details can be found here

Around the farm this Autumn

As I took Grandson Guy out for a walk yesterday I took my camera with me to take a few photographs to capture Autumn around the farm....

Titus walking on ahead up the back drive

The front drive where the Horse Chestnuts are throwing down their conkers

Cyclamen planted last year have bloomed again

This Acer in the farmhouse garden is a vibrant colour

There have been a lot of toadstools and mushrooms around the farm this year

Conkers we collected placed in a bowl - I love their mahogany colour
